SABIC® flame retardant polypropylene compound
The world is shifting to electric vehicles. Automakers need solutions to address thermal runaway and fire protection challenges. In addition, consumers need to have confidence in the safety and performance of EVs. This thermoplastic EV battery pack cover, in use today on a pHEV from Honda, can meet the needs of both audiences. A flame retardant SABIC® polypropylene compound from SABIC is used to mold the part. When exposed to flames, this material helps promote the formation of a protective intumescent char to physically and thermally protect the battery pack cover. With steel, thermal blankets are required, which adds significant weight, cost and environmental concerns. The SABIC material, by contrast, delivers up to 40% in weight savings, contributing to extended vehicle range, saves costs by functional integration, is recyclable, and has a lower overall CO2 footprint. This Honda EV battery cover meets China’s stringent fire regulations. The part is a 2022 Edison Award Silver Winner.
